The perfect weekend to spend outdoors

This is not just another lazy weekend. Tomorrow marks the seventh annual National Get Outdoors Day, which is then swiftly followed by Father’s Day on Sunday. Throw some good weather into the mix, and you've got the perfect weekend for outdoor adventuring.

The National Get Outdoors Day is an event established to inspire healthy activity in the open air across the country. Partakers range from non-profit organizations to federal agencies, and people from the recreation industry.

Launched on June 14, 2008, by the USDA Forest Service (FS) and the American Recreation Coalition (ARC), these nationwide events are a conscious effort to inspire and motivate people, especially the young, to spend time outdoors.

Last year, 138 official Get Outdoors Day locations welcomed thousands of people to the joys of the great outdoors.

On Saturday, June 14, 2014, American families across will have the chance to get involved with conventional and alternative types of outdoor activities.

All of the events will be structured to have accessible “active fun” areas – places where visitors, and especially children, can learn how to use a fishing pole, go geocaching, help pitch a tent and more. The sites will be even more children-friendly by providing photo opportunities with characters like Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl.

Participants will also have the chance to attend follow-up activities called EchO events, which include introductions to mountain biking and fly-fishing, hikes with rangers to see wildlife, kayaking and rafting.

GO Day is an extension of the Get Outdoors USA! campaign, which encourages Americans to make use of parks, forests, and other public open spaces.

Get your sports kit out of the closet and give your Dad the chance to show you that another candle on his cake hasn’t affected his fitness. See you out there!
